Settings & Preferences

The Settings area is where you tailor how Violoop looks, behaves, and what it's allowed to do. This page walks through what you'll find there. Use the search box at the top of Settings to jump straight to any option by name.

Changes save automatically. Most settings save the moment you change them — there's no Save button to hunt for. A small indicator shows saving and then saved. Because your assistant's brain lives on the device, these preferences travel with the device, not with one computer.

This Computer

Settings that apply to the Violoop app on this particular computer.

• General — Choose the assistant's language (or leave it on Auto), pick which monitor the floating status island appears on, and set up a network proxy if your connection needs one. There's also a Restart onboarding button to re-run the first-time setup wizard.
• Runtime — Status of the small bundled components Violoop uses to run tasks. Normally these just work; if one shows an error you can reinitialize it here.
• System Permissions (macOS) — Grant and review the macOS permissions Violoop needs to operate your computer — Accessibility, Automation, Screen Recording, and more. Each row shows whether it's granted and links to the right system settings. See Operating Your Computer.
• Version & Update — Check for and install updates to both the desktop app and the device firmware, and view release notes.

Assistant Intelligence

How your assistant thinks and what tools it can reach.

• Models — Choose where the AI runs: Violoop Cloud (the simplest option, with your account balance shown) or Custom (bring your own API keys, or run local models). Pick the active model and how hard it should "think" (reasoning effort).
• Tools — Turn individual built-in tools on or off, and see which ones ask for your confirmation before running.
• Skills — Manage the reusable skills your assistant has learned. Enable, disable, or remove them, and open the skills folder.
• Voice & Language — Set the language used for speech recognition when you talk to Violoop.
• MCP Servers — Connect external tool servers (Model Context Protocol) to extend what the assistant can do, or install from a recommended catalog.
• Plugins — Install, launch, and configure plugins that add new capabilities and surfaces.
• Proactive — Control whether Violoop offers suggestions on its own, and how eager it should be. You can pause it entirely, and there are privacy controls for any data it collects.

Permissions

Under the device settings you'll find Permissions — the controls for what Violoop is allowed to do on your computer. This is worth knowing well:

• Access presets — Quick profiles (Safe / Recommended / Trusted) that set a sensible baseline in one click.
• File access — Whether the assistant may read and write files at all.
• Command execution — Whether running terminal commands is denied, always asks first, or is allowed.
• Allowed Directories — The list of folders the file tools may touch. Add a folder here to let Violoop work in it; anything not on the list stays off-limits to file editing. (This is the whitelist described in Operating Your Computer.)

Tightening these is the main way to keep Violoop on a short leash; loosening them lets it do more without asking.

Your Device

Settings for the Violoop hardware itself.

• Wi-Fi — Connect the device to a wireless network so it can reach the cloud. Scan, pick a network, and enter the password.
• Timezone — Set the device's timezone.
• Volume — Adjust the device speaker volume.
• Proxy — An outbound network proxy for the device's own traffic (separate from the app's proxy under General).
• Security — View the device's trust information: its public key and the list of client devices enrolled with it. Read-only.

Account & Backup

• Account — Your profile (name, email), with options to edit your profile and change your password, plus Logout.
• Backup & restore — Back up all of your device's data and memory to the cloud, restore from a previous backup, or export and import a backup as a local file. This is how you safeguard your assistant's memory and move it between devices.
• Budget — See today's spend and set a daily spending limit (or turn on Unlimited). A breakdown and 7-day history help you keep an eye on usage.
• Stats — Read-only usage and performance analytics: request counts, token usage, latency trends, and a per-model breakdown.

Advanced

• Compaction — For long conversations, Violoop condenses older context to stay within limits. Here you can watch each session's context usage, trigger that condensing manually, and export a session transcript.
• Icon Models — Manage the small per-app vision models Violoop caches to recognize what's on your screen.
• Edge Status — A connection and diagnostics dashboard for the device link — signaling status, network details, and a reconnect button.

Developer mode. Clicking the version string at the bottom of Settings seven times unlocks developer mode, which reveals extra advanced panels (like a system-prompt editor). You won't need this for normal use.
